Most of us don’t think we deserve “bad” things in life. In fact, one of the most common arguments against the existence of God is that “bad” things happen—to people we respect, to people we love, and of course to us. If God exists, so the argument goes, he wouldn’t allow these “bad” things to happen.[i] The unspoken assumption is that we deserve better. However, as common and as understandable as this assumption may be, from God’s perspective it is simply wrong. . . .
